My Journey – From Struggle to Service
Mrs. Pushpa Bajaj
I have spent a major part of my life in Meghalaya — a land of breathtaking beauty but also a region marked by periodic tensions between tribal and non-tribal communities. One day in 1979 remains etched in my memory forever. Violence had erupted suddenly. I found myself trapped with my three-month-old infant amidst chaos — five vehicles were set on fire before my eyes, and a violent mob surged forward. My only thought was to save my child and myself. Somehow, I managed to escape, but the incident left a deep scar. I wondered if I should leave Shillong for good.

Pushpa Bajaj: A Visionary Leader Transforming Lives Through Compassion, Empowerment, and Sustainability
Pushpa Bajaj: A Life Dedicated to Compassion, Courage, and Lasting Change
Pushpa Bajaj is not just a social leader—she is a force of quiet transformation whose work has reshaped lives, communities, and mindsets across India. Guided by empathy, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility toward society, her journey spans disability rehabilitation, digital inclusion, women’s empowerment, environmental sustainability, and grassroots development.
Her work does not focus on temporary relief. It creates dignity, independence, and long-term impact.
Giving Children Back Their Mobility—and Their Futures
One of the most moving chapters of Pushpa Bajaj’s work unfolded in Meghalaya, where 16 children living with severe physical disabilities were unable to walk or live independently. Through her intervention, and in collaboration with Narayan Seva Sansthan (Udaipur) and Civil Hospital, Shillong, these children received corrective surgeries, medical care, and sustained rehabilitation.
But the true transformation went far beyond surgery.
Today, many of these children live independently, earn livelihoods within their villages, and some have even joined Pushpa Bajaj’s organization, Shubham, as active contributors to social service. What began as medical support became a journey of restored confidence, dignity, and hope.
Breaking Barriers Through Digital Education for Persons with Disabilities
Understanding that true empowerment comes through opportunity, Pushpa Bajaj led the launch of a nationwide Online Digital Learning Program for persons with disabilities through Shubham Charitable & Welfare Association, in collaboration with AT&T Technology Institute.
This program opened doors for individuals who had long been excluded due to physical, social, or geographical limitations.
Courses include:
-
Digital Marketing
-
Account Management
-
Office Administration
-
Graphic Design
-
Other job-oriented skill programs
Delivered entirely online via Zoom, the program offers a disability-inclusive curriculum, certifications, internship opportunities, and strong employability outcomes—enabling participants to build sustainable careers with confidence.
Building Communities from the Ground Up
Pushpa Bajaj’s grassroots development work focuses on lasting solutions rather than short-term aid. Her initiatives include:
-
Solar lighting in villages lacking reliable electricity
-
Improved access to education and healthcare
-
Integrated development addressing livelihoods, health, infrastructure, and education
Each project is rooted in the belief that development must be inclusive, sustainable, and community-driven.
Leadership When It Mattered Most: COVID-19 and Whisling Village
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Whisling Village was completely cut off from essential supplies. For three consecutive months, Pushpa Bajaj ensured that every household received uninterrupted ration and necessities.
Her timely intervention protected lives, preserved dignity, and brought stability during a moment of deep uncertainty.
Later, she also helped bring national and international recognition to the village through the construction of the Amrit Mahotsav Gate, now a celebrated cultural landmark and symbol of resilience.
SHE Rise – Zero Waste Mission: Where Women, Health, and the Environment Meet
In 2022, during the Umkhrah River Clean-Up Campaign, Pushpa Bajaj was deeply disturbed by the large quantities of sanitary waste polluting the river. That moment became the seed for a powerful movement—SHE Rise: Zero Waste Mission.
The initiative addresses three critical issues simultaneously:
-
Menstrual health and safety
-
Plastic and environmental pollution
-
Economic empowerment of rural women
Through the production and distribution of safe, reusable sanitary products, the mission drastically reduces menstrual waste while creating livelihood opportunities for women.
A Landmark National Pilot and Quality Recognition
To ensure safety, comfort, and real-world acceptance, a national pilot was conducted involving 5,000 schoolgirls across 20 states. Their feedback directly shaped product improvements.
In 2024, SHE Rise achieved a major milestone with BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Certification, establishing its credibility and readiness for national scale.
Strong Government Support and Rapid Growth in Meghalaya
The initiative received strong backing from Meghalaya Chief Minister Shri Conrad K. Sangma, who sanctioned ₹5 lakh to accelerate the project. Within just 60 days, the first production unit was established and inaugurated by MLA Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah and Padma Shri Patricia Mukhim.
Further recognition followed when Madam Mahtab Chandi, wife of the Chief Minister, distributed pads produced by rural women. Seeing its transformative impact, the Chief Minister personally inaugurated the expanded unit and pledged access to reusable sanitary pads for every girl in Meghalaya.
Vision 2030: A Menstrual Waste-Free India
By 2030, Pushpa Bajaj envisions that SHE Rise will:
-
Create employment for over 5,000 women
-
Help build a Menstrual Waste-Free India
-
Reduce nearly ₹5,000 crore worth of menstrual waste
-
Protect soil, water bodies, aquatic life, and women’s health
It is a mission that directly confronts plastic pollution, water contamination, and unsafe menstrual practices—while restoring dignity and opportunity to women.
National Recognition and a Growing Footprint
What began in Meghalaya has now expanded to Tripura, Assam, and Rajasthan, with plans for nationwide implementation. Pushpa Bajaj’s work has earned national recognition, including interactions with the Prime Minister, President, and Finance Minister of India.
Yet, her focus remains firmly on the ground—where change truly begins.
A Call to Walk Together
Pushpa Bajaj invites social organizations, institutions, corporates, and individuals to become partners in the SHE Rise – Zero Waste Mission.
Protect the Earth. Safeguard women’s health. Empower rural livelihoods.
This is not just an initiative—it is a shared responsibility toward society, the environment, and future generations.

Her journey includes interactions and meetings with the Honourable Prime Minister of India, the President of India, the Finance Minister of India, and several Chief Ministers, Governors, Ministers, and senior policymakers from different states.
These engagements have helped amplify her initiatives, strengthen policy-level support, and bring grassroots issues—particularly those related to women’s health, disability inclusion, and environmental sustainability—into wider national conversations.
Join the movement. Be part of the change.
The Larger Mission
For me, this is not just a social project — it is a fight for menstrual hygiene and dignity. In many parts of Northeast India, taboos and lack of access to menstrual products still push women into unsafe practices. My mission is to replace shame with awareness, and waste with sustainability.
Through Shubham Charitable Association, established in 1998, we have been serving disadvantaged women, children, and persons with disabilities in Northeast India through education, health, empowerment, and sustainable livelihood initiatives. Our projects have been recognised by both the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya and the Hon’ble President of India.
Today, the Zero Waste Period campaign is reaching women in remote border villages, delivering four BIS-certified reusable pads per woman along with hygiene awareness sessions. Our goal is to reach 100,000 menstruating women in the coming years.
This is my journey — from facing violence and doubt to creating change and dignity — proving that determination can turn even the deepest scars into the strongest purpose.
